My 3 Rotor RX-7

My 20B RX-7 goes to the NOPI Nationals in San Antonio. I was asked by TOYO Tires to park my car in their booth. On Sunday the final judging was in and my RX-7 won Best of Show in the Asian class.

The motor is done and in the car! See rebuild pix here. What a difference the porting, polishing and upgraded internals made. It feels like a totally different engine!

4/25/2002

My 20B is back from MVA Motorsports. Next to repaint the side housings red to match the car and then put it all back together.

2/15/2002

My 20B is pulled to be rebuilt with all new seals and race parts. Extra pins were added in each housing to keep the motor from twisting. Under boost the single turbo produces alot more torque and can twist an unpinned motor.

"Oh,my God!!!" My car is now insane! I drove the car last night for the first time with the new turbo setup. The 20B 3 rotor is a totally different animal with a single big turbo. I am going to have to learn how to drive my car all over again. With only 5psi of boost it starts breaking the rear tires loose through third gear! At 8psi the rear tires are spinning in 4th gear. Time to finalize the installation and tweak the air/fuel maps before the Inaugural Long Horn Nationals at River City Raceway in San Antonio November 10-11,2001. Single turbo pix.

The T-66 single turbo install is almost finished! Click here for the updated pix.

08/29/2001

The 3 rotor RX-7 is in the shop at Alamo Rotary to start on the single turbo install! The rear toe links are being retro-fitted to remove the "passive-steering"effect. This makes the rear of the car jerk violently to the right under hard acceleration. The Racing Beat Springs are also scheduled to go in as well.

Well, one of the original twin turbos decided to start pushing out alot of oil so instead of fixing them I am going to go to a single turbo setup. I ordered a T66 single along with an Progate waste gate and a 6 stage electronic boost controller from Innovative Turbo. It should be real interesting to see what the 20B can do with the single turbo. Everyone tells me it will build a whole lot more HP! ]

My 20B RX-7 goes to the World Import Challenge in Houston, TX. On friday before all of the flooding started, I had a chance to dyno the car at the show. Since I was still “breaking in” the motor, I ran it on the dyno @ only 8psi of boost with a redline of 7000rpm. I was pleasantly suprised by the result! At such low boost and RPM it still produced a whopping 355.3 RWHP and 300ft/lbs of torque. That should be close to 450HP @ the flywheel. Later that evening I also ran it in the 1/4mile time trials. I ran a 12.9sec@ 109.9 mph at the same low boost settings. I launched the car like I was taking off from a stop light without spinning the street tires and then just let the hammer down. Not bad for fully loaded and running on street tires! My 1/8th mile speed was a quick 89.9 mph after that there wasn’t enough boost to keep the same velocity.

My 20B RX-7 wins the Sport Compact class of the MovementOne Car show at the IDRC Lone Star Nations race held in San Antonio, TX.

The 3 Rotors go to the Coastal Bend PCA track event. Check out the view a few of the Porsches had in the Gallery

It lives, the Beast lives!! Today I started the 3 rotor for the first time. WOW! Can you say V-12? that’s what it sounds like. It sure doesn’t sound like a normal RX-7! Tomorrow the ECU gets dialed in and then it’s time to break the 20B in.

1/9/2001

Well work has started again. Tito says a couple of more weeks and she’ll be done! The large front mount intercooler and radiator are mounted and the “3-Rotor” seats installed.

12/5/2000

20B is dropped into engine bay. Next the motor is mated to the tranny, and waiting for the HUGE custom front mount intercooler, and extra-large custom radiator to be installed. Next will be the ECU, a Microtech MTX-12 to run the 20B. The custom "3-Rotor" seats are ready to go in next.

8/3/2000

The subframe, 3" SS midpipe w/resonator, and modified spindles are installed.

7/1/2000

The 20B is almost ready to be installed. The custom engine subframe is ready, the ACT heavy-duty pressure plate and Racing Beat light alum. flywheel are installed and the polished air separator tank is ready. The 3" 20B turbo downpipe and mid pipe are made, and the custom radiator is here, just waiting on the custom front mount inter-cooler to be finished.

6/4/2000

The 13B is SOLD and pulled from the engine bay making room for the 20B. The 3 rotor transformation has begun!!

5/8/2000

UPDATE!! The 3 rotor from Australia is here. Check out the My 3 Rotor Project page

3/14/2000

Well some of the pictures of the new interim engine are in. I say interim engine, because I just came back from Ft. Lauderdale, FLA, where I visited Pettit Racing. I took a spin in Cam's 3-rotor 20B, twin-turbo powered 3rd Gen RX-7. Words cannot describe the experience. Now, I have been bitten by the 3-rotor bug!

1/14/2000

Well it is in! As soon as I get the pictures developed of the new ported motor I will post them in the Gallery. WOW! What a difference. The car has taken on a whole new personality. This baby is still pulling at 130MPH like you were doing 75 in third gear.It is amazing what all the modifications have done. Next thing I need to do is put the car on the dyno and see what kind of horsepower we can achieve. By rough calculations it should be around 300 RWHp (rear wheel horse power)

1/11/2000

Today I witnessed the removal of the original 13B from my RX-7. Next item on the list is to detail the engine bay while it is empty. The new motor should go in Thursday...

1/8/2000

Well, by the end of this week, "Can you say, "A whole lot quicker?? !!"" is going to have a whole new meaning. My 3rd Gen is currently under going "minor" engine modifications. Tito Ramos from Alamo Rotary is performing his magic by street porting the 13B, adding 3mm apex seals, and competition oil springs. To keep all the mods happy, read cooler, I am also adding a Mostly Mazda larger intercooler with highly polished plumbing, and a Greddy polished intake elbow. It should be real interesting to to see how well this baby will perform when it is all put back together in time for the SA RX7 Club Hill Country Road Rally and monthly meeting this weekend (Jan 15/16th). Until then.....
